Colonial Farm Day and Militia Camp
June 4, 2011
June 4, 2011
The Plantation’s hours are 11 to 5 with the last admission at 4.
During the Revolutionary War, local farmers with their wives and children would gather at a farm and drill as part of the militia. The 11th Pennsylvania militia unit will assemble at the Plantation on Saturday, June 4th. Drill and military affairs were only a small part of the gathering. Colonists socialized and exchanged information on farming, political events and plain local gossip. Our gathering will include washing wool, skirting wool, spinning, weaving and working with flax. You may harvest some spring vegetables and pinch some herbs to take home. Our farmer will be plowing the fields. If you wish to avoid the farm work then we will have authentic colonial tea to sample plus colonial dancing. Of course there will be some gunfire when the militia drills. There will be a children’s drill to encourage future recruits. Enjoy a day in the country that is very close to home
