Media’s Bastille Day Festival



 Media Arts Council (M.A.C.) will host its annual Bastille Day celebration on Saturday, July 14, 2012, 6:00-10:30pm in downtown Media. Media’s Bastille Day celebration is free, family-friendly street festival in the heart of downtown Media welcoming the entire community to experience the arts, history, and the spirit of independence.

Visitors will have the opportunity to stroll through three French-inspired villages focused on children’s activities, artists, and community partners. They will enjoy live music, hands-on art activities, unique arts displays and demonstrations, and more. The following is a schedule of events taking place throughout the evening.

6:00pm: Bastille Day celebration begins with various community partners throughout State Street
6:00pm: Aristocats Cat Show by the SPCA
6:15pm: Fair Trade Awards on Plum Street Mall
6:30pm: Reenactment of the Storming of the Bastille by the Hedgerow Theater
7:15-7:45: The Lost Northern Tribe in concert at the Jackson Street stage
7:15-7:45: The Azure Wheel concert on the Orange Street stage
7:45-8:20pm: Dance lessons by Vince Masciarelli
8:30-10pm: Featured band Zydeco-a-Go-Go on the Main Stage

Special children’s attractions throughout the evening include:
·         Live performance by Silly Joe
·         Make your own tie-dye t-shirt with the Community Art Center
·         Hands-on percussion instruments with Makin’Music
·         Facepainting
·         Caricature artists
·         Juggling unicyclist Dick Rainer
·         An incredible bubble machine with Tyler Arboretum
·         Art activities with an opportunity to display your work
·         And more hands-on activities, plus a snow cone truck and other special treats

Plein air painters will be stationed throughout State Street drawing inspiration from the event as they paint. Strolling accordion players will provide additional ambience. And many Media restaurants will offer outdoor dining.

Bastille Day is a French national holiday with many parallels to the American Independence Day.  The Media Arts Council celebrates Bastille Day as an historic event symbolic of the freedom that paved the way for, among other things, artistic expression.
